The Italian tenor, Luciano Pavarotti, one of the great voices of the 20th century, died last week. I never met Signor Pavarotti but I saw him sing many times on the opera stage and he was always thrilling to hear. This piece, NESSUN DORMA from Puccini's opera TURANDOT, became one of Pavarotti's signature pieces and because of this, today it is one of the most popular and familiar of all romantic Italian tenor arias. I have performed theremin versions of this composition a couple of times with symphony orchestras, but whenever I play it I always see and hear Pavarotti in my imagination. Along with millions of other Pavarotti fans, I will miss his magnificent voice and powerful presence.
