I'm of the opinion that there's a call for due process when it's blatantly obvious that one community is pressuring certain members within it, often with violent retribution, to behave a certain way. You can't exactly see bruises under a burka. That doesn't make banning a good option, but, if I were in a position of power, I would make certain that school teachers would pay special attention to burka wearing girls to look for abuse—not that they wouldn't be responsible for reporting other abuse

bless your heart and mind- not to mention that face. well done

@Afterthoughtbtw "a secondary argument that being able to see a face was required for social interaction."
in a free society we are allowed to be anti-social cunts. Also, women now, are required to take down their veils when going though security screening, but they can do it in private with a female guard.
end of chiping in

This is just a thought but what if a Muslim (or non-Muslim) wears the burqa in order to hide there identity in order to commit a crime. There's no way police could do facial recognition from the security footage.
-
@nactan Um... what? What are you grateful for, and what does it have to do with me?
-
@ZPM7 because i'm not ungrateful
As I understand it, the so-called 'burqa ban', wasn't a ban on the burqa. It was a ban on facial coverings. I also thought the main argument for it was security related - being able to see a person's face for security purposes. Backed up by a secondary argument that being able to see a face was required for social interaction.
Whilst I think the argument you address may have been part of the inspiration, I don't think it was the main argument.
I'm not entirely sure where I stand on it.

@Afterthoughtbtw According to every article I read, the law makers were proposing this law in reference to the islamic veil.

@LatumWay A quick look on wikipaedia shows that it is indeed all head wear that is affected - including motor cycle helmets, for example. Whilst a lot of the articles linked to in the papers from the wiki page do suggest it was inspired by the burqas, it certainly was not phrased in such a way to be directed at just them. It's probably worth remembering that papers want a story, and Burqa ban is more contentious than face mask ban. As I said, still an inspiration, though, granted.

@Afterthoughtbtw The comments by Sarkozy i.e the veils are 'not welcome in france', and that the ban is to 'uphold secular values' always suggested to me that this was more than just a face covering ban.
