This is the original - released in 1968 of Pyramid Records by The Maytals. All the other versions are covers (and in my view less good). The b-side on this release was ''Dreamland'' by Rolando Alphonso. Check it out. Sublime. Surely the highest quality reggae release of the year when both sides are taken into account.

This is actually the earlier version to be released. This came out as a single in 1968. The version titled "54-46 WAS My Number" came out two years later in 1970 and has different lyrics and a more freewheelingly soulful presentation. Only difference between this and mixes I've heard previously of this recording is the longer fade at the end.
Which is that version? I mean does anyone have more information about the release, year etc? please i NEED to find that one. The other version is very well known, but this... just this!!!
