yea i just watched this for the first time and it is a good movie....but there were scenes in it that were ummmm traumatizing. particularly the one involving the sink disposal.....
Without defending Jeff. It isn't Hailey's place to exact vigilante revenge on Jeff just like it isn't Jigsaw's place in the Saw series. Just as gruesome, just as unjustly and inhumane. On top of that, she dealt her punishment in a cruel way. She cites lawfulness when she opens his safe, but breaks it in her cruelty. If justice is what she wanted, she should have called the police, otherwise she's an equal monster to Jeff and Aaron. Ultimately, what gives her the right to judge this man?
You're right, she shouldn't have been able to do this act--in the REAL world. I believe there's a difference between fiction and reality. In other words, since this movie isn't real, Hailey is abiding by the fictional rules, which basically state, "I can do this as long as I have a good reason and I won't get caught." Also, this movie-being fiction-gives pedo-hater viewers such as me a sweet and sour satisfaction, because we feel this would be proper justice. Justice, by definition, is fair
Cont: fair punishment that matches the crime. A pedophile being sent to jail is miniscule compared to the raping and/or killing of a child. Sure, they might get raped in their cells by their roommates, but their life is practically over anyway. A child victim has to live with the trauma of rape for the rest of their life, which will logically last longer than the pedophile's life in jail (unless they commit suicide). So, yeah, Jeff does deserve this cruelty in the movie. And he, just like all
Cont. (again) ...the other pedophiles out there, deserved the cruelty that Hailey did in this movie. In the real world, yes, she doesn't have the right to do this. But no, her act doesn't make her an equal monster to Aaron and Jeff (she's on another, much more likeable level), because she didn't kill an innocent. Hell, she didn't even kill him. Jeff made the choice to kill himself. He and Aaronn on the other hand, killed that girl. I think there's a difference between the two of them.
Granted, Jeff died in the end, but had he lived, he would have lived with this experience for the rest of his life. Instead, he took the easy way out, and didn't live to live out a traumatized life. That is a little bittersweet to me--justice probably wasn't as served well as I thought it was. But I appreciated the events that led to that climax in the movie. Plus, why should you take Hailey's actions so seriously anyway? I say again, this movie is fiction, not reality.
