funky soul from the late overton vertis wright. "ace of spades" was produced by hi records producer willie mitchell in memphis, tennessee. there is about 3 different versions of this song all featuring the same backing instrumental but has o.v. phrasing and ad-libbing differently on each. since this is the version i heard first back when i was a kid, this one's my favorite. for some reason, this version can only be found on vinyl. o.v. wright will always be remembered as one of the greatest hard soul singers of all time. he was a stateside favorite and enjoyed a cult following overseas especially japan.

o.v. wright sadly passed away in 1980.

  • I love instrumentation. It's absolute genius. The vocals are hotter than a Manassas Street corner, but between that Jack being called weak, and that "Ace of Clubs to keep my babe in place" bullshit absolutely fucks it up for me.

    Thanks, but NO, THANKS.

  • @PatrioticPirate Well now,let's be truthful:

A Jack IS weak, it's the lowest rank out of the face cards. The only other card it can trump in many card games is a 10! (laugh).

I do agree with you on the "Ace Of Clubs" line but I guess the writer of the song (Deadric Malone) couldn't resist since the whole song references a deck of cards.

  • @soln4suhreborn I take exception to that Jack line because I am known in certain circles as The Jack of Spades. I know, this line wasn't aimed at me, I'm only 40, so I may not have even been born at the time s the release of this song, but trust me: I definitely wouldn't keep my babe in line with any of that Ace of Clubs bullshit. And I'm personally not weak, so those two facts trump the entire song.

    Thanks, but NO, THANKS.

  • @PatrioticPirate

To each his own I guess.....but I enjoyed having the discussion with you, that's part of what YouTube's about-sharing music, videos AND opinions.

    Take care!

  • This song really isn't that politically correct. First he says the woman who played a game on him is dead and he uses the Ace of Clubs to keep his baby in place. That means going up side her head if she acts up. But it's a great great song nonetheless.

  • @Rayvyn007 That;s true about the "ace of clubs" reference, but "she's not here anymore"....c'mon,now! That can simply mean he replaced her with someone new-LOL!

  • No wonder Robert Cray list this guy as one of his biggest influences.....U hear so much OV in Robert!!

  • I love this songs, it helped me to survive a bad relationship. I've searched for the ACE OF SPADES for a long time. Good music, good music!

  • @soln4suhreborn yea but its also that the ace keeps the queen good in a poker game, otherwise they probably wouldnt have played that song altogether

  • The correct title is not "Ace Of Spades," it's "Ace Of Spade." It says so, right on the label.

  • The trumpets on this song are 12 times hotter than the sun!
