The Beatles sold records on the back of MASSIVE worldwide media support. There was nothing like them at the time. Make no mistake that if the Monkeys were in that time period, they too would have had massive success.

Not saying either is better than the other, both are great, it's just impossible to compare the merits of two different sounding bands in different time periods.

Although the Beatles are my favorite band ever, having the most No 1s makes them the most successful band ever, not necessarily the best. As Alex said the best band ever is different for everyone, subjective, and that makes the world an interesting and varied place.
