Harry Nilsson's version of "You Can't Do That" by the Beatles. He uses parts and lyrics from other Beatles songs. Just listening to it once, I got these (in order they appear). The horns could be from another Beatles song but I can't quite pinpoint it. The Song is fantastic. here's a quote from wikipedia
"When John Lennon and Paul McCartney held a press conference in 1968 to announce the formation of Apple Corps, John was asked to name his favorite American artist. He replied, "Nilsson". Paul was then asked to name his favorite American group. He replied, "Nilsson"."

"She's a Woman"
"I'm Down"
"Drive My Car"
"You're Gonna Lose that Girl"
"Good Day, Sunshine"
"Hard Day's Night"
"Rain"
"I want to Hold your Hand"
"Day Tripper"
"Paper Back Writer"
(the shalala might be from Nowhere Man)
"Do you want to know a Secret"
"Norwegian Wood"
"Yesterday"
"Strawberry Fields Forever"

Also, I don't know how to work imovie (as basic as it is) and I just wanted to put this song up on youtube. I'm sorry it is not more visually entertaining

  • I think the "oooh la la las' are from " You Won't See Me". "Nowhere Man" is more "aah la la la".

  • @MannMan2001 Great That makes more sense

  • "my babe dont buy me presents" is a reference to "boys"

  • @easytotypein I think it might just be a reference to "She's a woman", or maybe a "she's a woman" and "can't buy me love" hybrid

  • If anyone catches a snippet from another Beatle song, please feel free to comment on it! I read on wikipedia that there are 20 other Beatles songs in Nilsson's track, and I only counted 14 (possibly 15)

  • Look at my profile picture.

  • Very ingenious...Nilsson was GREAT!!

  • "How can you laugh when you know I'm down" is from the song "I'm Down" which was first released as the "B" side of the single "Help," the lead vocal is sung by Paul McCartney and is well known from its live performance at the Beatles' famous 1965 Shea Stadium concert in New York. Agreed that this is an excellent tune, decades before people came up with the idea of "Mashups."

  • I only heard Day Tripper, Paperback Writer, Baby It's You, Drive My Car, Down, You're Gonna Lose that Girl, Good Day Sunshine,Do You Want to Know a Secret, Hard Day's Night, Yesterday, and Strawberry Fields Forever. I also heard a bunch of music (guitar, brass, drums) that sounded familiar, but I can't put my finger on it. Where were the other ones?

  • @easytotypein No, it's a reference to She's a Woman (my love don't give me presents)

  • "Strawberry Beatles Forever" (2:10)

  • @easytotypein its a ref from "she's a woman" not "boys" and im 100% positive.
