Brushes are used to remove the greasy chalk residue from the rock. When a climber says that a hold is greasy they generally mean it is covered in chalk. So when you go to your favorite climbing spot, brush the holds to prevent wear. Also buy brushes that are made for cleaning rock, brushes made of certain material (plastic, metal) can erode the rocks surface. When a hold is polished, or over brushed it becomes glassy.
@kbar4x4 Hi. Actually, climbers use brushes to get chalk off the rocks. If there's too much chalk on the rocks, the climber's hands will tend to slip off. The chalk's only purpose is to keep the hands free of moisture- any more than that and the rocks lose their "grippiness" ^ ^
