Thailand is preparing to go to the polls this weekend just a year after the army cleared protestors opposing the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva from the streets.

The military intervention saw soldiers turn their weapons on civilian demonstrators, causing scores of deaths and injuries. But twelve months later there is new attention on the role of women in politics in Thailand as Yingluck Shinawatra runs for the prime ministership.

If elected, Yingluck, the younger sister of former prime minister Thaksin, has said that she will use her femininity to foster much-needed reconciliation in a country deeply divided over deadly political violence.

South-East Asia correspondent Zoe Daniel reports for Newsline.
