@AlanSturgess I think that largely this is just some bullshit that has been propagating. I own a few of these (all modified), but no paint issues whatsoever.

Great demo of the cleaner types of tone from this guitar - I heard one comment about poor quality of finish for the Melody Maker, but feedback in the Gibson forum suggests that this was a one-off experience.
What was the quaity of your instrument like? Any problems with frets or neck?
