As a former Catholic, who found monasticism fascinating, and Thomas Merton an inspiring Catholic, I had an awakening that my childhood religion left me empty. I came to the knowledge that I had no personal relationship with God. My reading of the Scriptures and loving friends brought me to a point when I surrendered to Jesus, realizing He's the only way to salvation. About the same time I discovered that Merton was trying to find something missing from his life and he died still searching.

There will never be another Merton. We're so blessed that he shared some fraction of the depth of his understanding of life's meaning and the very nature of God with us.
