This is the climax from the well-known 1972 Night Gallery episode where Stuart Whitman falls in love with a mermaid (played by actress Annabelle Garth) who got caught up in his net. He gets sold a potion that when administered to her, is supposed to give her legs - and it does. But she doesn't exactly turn out how he expects.

I suppose the cap'n was willing to accept the "other" kind of mermaid, the one with the lady half on the bottom! Poor man was lonely.
