On Saturday, June 13, American Wildlands' staff, a Sun Ranch wrangler and American Wildlands members saddled up Sun Ranch trail horses for a full day ride that followed the Madison Passage, a major wildlife corridor in southwest Montana.
Each year thousands of elk follow this glacier carved canyon as they move between winter to summer range in the Madison and Gallatin Mountains. Wolves, black bear and grizzly bear, mountain goat, wolverine, pronghorn--a full complement of Northern Rockies wildlife--leave their sign along the corridor. The land is a wildlife paradise and the riders had a chance to see it first hand.
American Wildlands co-Executive Directors April Johnston and Lisa Lenard accompanied the riders, pointing out a nursery herd of elk (mama elk with their babies), bear rubbings on tree trunks, abundant fresh bear scat all along the trail, and identifying early spring flowers and soaring raptors.
I've lived in Ennis for over 22 years.. only was up to the Sun Ranch once, when they were making a movie up there in the mid 90's... Never been up where you were. Just amazing.. thank you for this window on a part of the area I live in.. that lake is pictured on the wall of an insurance office here in town.. Amazing.
