@EpicEarn Because there is a waxy substance in their brains called spermaceti and throughout history it was is used to make things like candles and sope so they named it a sperm whale in short of spermaceti.

@MrSuperMooman Although it may be possible for Sperm whales to emit sonic pulses that could do such a thing, evidence from actual recordings of diving, feeding sperm whales suggest that the don't, nor seem to have the need to. A scientist that has looked at this sort of work is Peter Madsen, a colleague and sperm whale researcher from Denmark. Anton van Helden, Collection Manager Marine Mammals at Te Papa
