I know cucumbers are salt resistant but what other vegetables do you grow with salty water?

Don't you have cattle at Lotan? Do they drink the salty water? Does it cause kidney abnormalities in them? Just curious.

Our well water is salty, about 3 times as much as the national standard (which is higher in Israel than in Europe) - it can be consumed but its not so tasty. We supply the cows with the same water that we drink - we have a desalination plant on the kibbutz. All of the trees and the veggies in the garden survive on the salty water - pretty amazing considering how well they grow. Alex

I heard the Israelis were experimenting in the Negev to see what crops can be grown with seawater. Has anything come out of that?

On Lotan we treat all of our waste water with plants in a desert modified constructed wetlands and re-use the water for irrigation of our nature and migratory bird reserve. Half of our dates are irrigated with very salty/brackish (not quite seawater) ground water and the other half from treated waste water from the city of Eilat. All of the trees, grass and even our swimming pool uses salty ground water that needs to be desalinized before drinking.
