Even putting down this experience in words brings alive a soothing and serene feeling. Last Sunday, the 2nd of August saw XIMB celebrate life through music. And behold...this was by no means a pop, rock or film music...nor was it something that we get to hear too often amongst college goers...it was nothing short of a dream in this hectic and assiduous life at XIMB! This unique music concert was laced with our very own Indian culture and the ambience suited the occasion just right. The Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY), XIMB chapter organised a soulful and mesmerizing Hindustani classical music concert in the campus auditorium which was replete with the traditional gaddas as seating arrangement. The lazy Sunday evening had a festive aura with students dressed in bright traditional attire (for a change) after an exhausting week of quizzes, assignments and lectures that went by. I waited with bated breath in anticipation of a complete rewinding experience. And I was more relaxed and liberated after the performance than I had ever expected.

We had amongst us Shri Sachin Patwardhan, a renowned sarod artist who was accompanied by his wife and Shri Charudatta Phadke, a very talented tabla player. Shri Sachin Patwardhan, a born artist, learned violen as a child from his father Shri M.N. Patwardhan, a famous violinist and his uncle Shri Vijay Patwardhan, a well known sitarist. He graduated in Science and thereafter completed his MBA during which he kept his passion for music alive. He explored the best of both worlds by learning to play the guitar under the guidance of Shri Vinod Gokcha. After mastering so many instruments he proved his voracity for music by undergoing 11 years of intensive training under the guidance of legendary Sarod maestro Padma Vibhushan Ustad Amjad Ali Khan Sahab. We were indeed very privileged to have someone who has performed all around the world play at our campus. Accompanying him on the Tabla was Shri Charudatta Phadke who is a disciple of the great guru Taalyogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkarji since the last 15 years and has been a part of the World Peace Music.

Shri Patwardhan started off with the Sarod rendition on a soothing and calm note and soon after Shri Charudatta joined in with his Tabla giving way to a perfectly synchronized jugalbandi. The deep, weighty, introspective sound of the Sarod with sympathetic strings in combination with the Tabla gave it a resonant, reverberant feel. Each composition started off with light and sober beats and proceeded to much faster and captivating beats. Shri Patwardhan later enchanted us with his spirited mandolin performance and concluded on a high point with the soulful raag Bhairavi. The musicians breathed life into the traditional Hindustani Classical renditions and captivated the audience with their flawless performance, leaving each of us spellbound with their sheer talent and passion for music. It felt awe-inspiring to see the audience sway gently to the beats, all-absorbed and immersed in the musical extravaganza. Our world came alive to the tunes of the musicians and we let ourselves go with the beautiful flow of the soulful instrumental music. It was a perfect amalgamation of the body, mind and soul and the feeling of tranquillity pervaded all sense of time and space. Such is the power of music. And such is the magic of XIMB!
