Speed run of Quest for Glory I: So You Want to Be a Hero. If timing begins when the Sheriff says "Good luck on your quest" and ends at the final ceremony, my time was approximately 9 minutes 29 seconds. Played using DOSBox v0.65.

As you can see, I made several mistakes, such as running into the graveyard after getting the seed and accidentally going left instead of down after getting the fairy dust. Also, for some weird reason, Acer put a $ key right above the arrow keys on my laptop, which is why you see me tap the $ key several times right near the end.

I believe a sub 9 minute run is very feasible. As far as I know, this is the quickest path possible. I may attempt this run again some other time, or even attempt a 500 point run. I also plan on running the other QFG games.

  • Silly question...is there any particular reason you went with thief rather than magic user? Is it just to pick the kobold's pocket? Seems to me everything else you do is more accurately served by magic user, and you could get away with simply casting fetch on the seed rather than climbing...although that is also prone to failure and you could run out of MP. Throwing might also be a good idea. I'm just not clear on what specifically thief gets you.

  • @azuarc Finally, there's the problem with resting. There are precious few ways to make time elapse faster, and you can't make yourself rest unless you're tired. You have to wait for nightfall before you can get the fairy dust. That's why I spend three minutes climbing the tree. If you can figure out how to make time go by faster than I did, then the Magic User might make for a slightly faster run.

  • @Rainault Give yourself throwing then. Stand in the middle of nowhere, grab a huge handful of rocks, and start throwing them. Uses up energy and raises your skill so you can hit the sporea seed. It's also a much faster animation than climbing the tree. Short of acrobatics, which isn't available until QFG3, that was usually my best answer to "working out."

  • @azuarc I was wary of this idea at first, since when throwing rocks to get the seed, you have to wait for the seed before each throw attempt. With climbing, you only climb once, then wait to catch the seed. However, with all the practice I'd be doing, my Throwing skill should actually be high enough to get it on the first try, at which point it doesn't matter. If I ever try to beat my time, I might try that.

  • greatest game of all time.

  • Favourite games of all time, good effort completing it this fast. I must have played when I was 6/7 yrs old for the first time and we couldn't even work out how to attack until playing for about 360 game 'days'. That's dedication!

  • I remember after installing the game way back when, 1st thing I said was "HOLY CRAP THESE GRAPHICS ARE NUTS!!!"

  • Quest for Glory is the RPG series Sierra adventure that was very successful.

  • Quest for Glory is the RPG series / Sierra adventure that was very successful, I lay VGA version came later.

  • it IS possible, to outrun the ogre, i did it with my thief!

  • This is epic.

  • P.S. Good work!

  • 5:20 Up key also works for "catch".

6:20 If the game has logic, then each of the eight periods of the 24-hour day should be three hours, you rest for 10 minutes, so you can pass one of those periods after 18 rests.

9:10 There's another abnormal path, if you don't consider it cheating. Simply walk diagonally past the corner trapdoor. It might not be worth it.

9:38 I was never forced to use the mirror. You can take it and continue to build up your character, then visit the castle.

  • 1:12 What do you mean, it can't be done??? The key to escaping the ogre without Calm is to get him to chase you around the middle of the room, turning and running away at almost the last second.

2:25 There's an easy way to "practice" stealth: just repeatedly switch between "sneaking" and walking or running. Nothing else matters, not even how long you were sneaking or walking.

3:20 If it helps you improve your time, you can try using space bar to change "up" to "down" and vice versa.

  • You have ruined the game for me... :(

But you have finally laid to rest a question that has been nagging at me on and off for ten years. :D
