  • An increase in cement use DOES NOT increase the building's ability to withstand earthquakes - only increases its resistance to compression loads. The building also needs to resist tension forces, which is what steel is used for. Bamboo can withstand compression and tension better than cement or steel - if the right species are grown, harvested, and processed, and proven construction methods are used. Bamboo is native to Sichuan, and can be harvested for timber every 3-4 years (it's sustainable).
