Bridges to Understanding, a Seattle-based nonprofit organization that brings students from different cultures together via their website (www.bridgesweb.org) and face to face exchanges, brought together students from India and South Africa to create digital stories together at Seattle's Pike Place market. KT (visiting student from the Tibetan Children's Village school in Dharamsala, India) and Sese (visiting South African student from outside Capetown) worked together with Lhwang (KT's Tibetan teacher) and Carrie (a local Seattle teacher from Lakeside) to create a digital story about people giving out free hugs at Seattle's Pike Place market. Their reactions show how hugs from strangers are perceived differently by different cultures.
KT's conclusion: "Hugging: we all love to hug our loved ones like your mom, your child, your father, or your friends. We all feel comfortable with it. But hugging the strangers is the most surprising thing. So, our group members would like to say that you don't need words to express your affection...you just need a hug."
Amen to everything that wonderful woman said! I love free hugs! I would hug everyone in the world if I could! Hug to everyone from US!!!!!!!
