"For a couple of nights in October of 2008 in the heart of New Yorks Greenwich Village we, The Knights, had the pleasure of performing with cellist Jan Vogler in a cabaret setting for an audience surrounding the orchestra, drinks in hand. The partnership between The Knights and our friend Jan that led to these evenings is a natural one, born of a similar adventuresome spirit. We asked ourselves: how can playing in one of Jimi Hendrix former musical homes, the old Village Gate (reborn
as Le Poisson Rouge) shed light on Shostakovichs great First Cello Concerto? Those of us in the orchestra felt that Shostakovichs Waltzes, as arranged by Ljova, took on a particularly cinematic feel with the clink of glasses chiming in merry accompaniment every now and then. His Cello Concerto had a dramatic immediacy and a rock and roll-like primal groove, and Jimi Hendrix spirit was conjured in Kyle Sannas raucous string arrangement. We like to imagine that you the listener are
now entering that atmosphere, favorite beverage in hand (or not) and ready to enjoy The Knights and Jan Vogler Experience." (Eric Jacobsen)
