Finding a good builder is key to the success of a self build project. Most good quality builders are registered with one of the big building industry organisations, such as the National House Builders Council (NHBC), the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) or the Guild of Master Craftsmen.
These organisations do spend a lot of time vetting their members, but nothing is 100% fool proof, so however you come across your builder and there are small builders who dont need to advertise or become a member of anything because theyre just good quality workmen, you should always get references.
Speak to their previous clients, look at their previous projects and make sure that somebodys willing to recommend them to you

Finding the perfect builder makes a big difference to a project – and isn’t as hard as you might think.
Look around for someone who is dedicated, inventive, highly skilled and adheres to the estimate.
It might seem like wishful thinking but they do exist.
