Baby loggerheads travel toward the ocean after hatching Aug 25, 2007 at Holden Beach, N.C. The local turtle patrol makes sure their flippers are ready for a life at sea by having them crawl down a trench before they counted one last time.

  • is there a reason why they couldn't make it out to the ocean on their own?

  • Here's what they tell observers: The turtles need to develop the motion necessary to swim -- if they are dropped in the water without doing some preliminary exercise, they won't make it. On their own, females attempt to nest far enough from the ocean so the nest won't be destroyed by high tide. So in nature the baby turtles have to make this descent to the sea anyway.
