Osterville, MA (Cape Cod) Ten of the world's most endangered sea turtles will be released off of a Cape Cod beach early Wednesday morning. These juvenile Kemp's Ridleys are the world's most endangered sea turtles and are the sea turtle species most affected by the Gulf oil spill.
These turtles were all found on Cape Cod beaches last fall, severely hypothermic and near death and were then rescued by the staff and volunteers of the Massachusetts Audubon Sanctuary at Wellfleet Bay . They were brought to the New England Aquarium for months of life-saving medical care. Among these ten turtles are Tupelo , Yosemite, Alcatraz , all named after national parks or monuments. They are now ready for release and will spend the remainder of the summer feeding on crabs south of the Cape before beginning their migration in the autumn.
Eight sea turtles are still finishing their release at the Aquarium, and they will be released in mid to late August.
