@mintedsalami To be honest, the original play is set in France, and there aren't many lions there either...
-
@mintedsalami maybe in 1500s they imported lions. :P :P or they may have had them. :P who knws.
-
@mikhailcazi Yes, but even then it's not an African lion.
-
@mintedsalami the actual story isn't set in japan. It's supposed to be somewhere near france.

B.D.H is exquisite!

the lion must have escaped from the zoo...
-
originally it wasnt set in japan...then the lion would make a lot MORE sense

Shakespeare probably didn't care that there weren't any lions or mountain lions in France (yes, the original doesn't make sense either)
I don't think it's such a big deal either, although I now remember that one criticism which Shakespeare's friend and admirer Ben Jonson made of him as a writer was that he "wanted art and sense" because in The Winter's Tale for example he "brought in a number of men saying they had suffered shipwrack in Bohemia, where there is no sea neer by some 100 miles."
oh! that's Oliver, apparently he turns good in like 5 minutes. cool.

since when are there random lions in japan? o.O
I think in the actual story it was a mountain lion, they couldn't have gone with that?...
