Chatswood Chase is embracing latest technology to reduce the number of shopping trolleys abandoned each year.
In a jointly funded initiative between Chatswood Chase, Coles and Kmart, the centre is conducting the staged installation of a magnetic wheel lock system to all its shopping trolleys.
The device works by mechanically locking a trolleys wheels when its pushed over a certain point, ensuring they all stay within the shopping centre environment.
Tens of thousands of shopping trolleys go missing in New South Wales every year and its been estimated that nationally, more than $400 million is spent keeping shopping trolleys in stores. That adds roughly $50 to the grocery bill of every Australian household each year.
Wayne Moodie from Chatswood Chase shows North Shore Times journalist Kat Adamski how the new system works.
It doesn't work.
Our shoppers here just lift the front wheels over the magnetic strip, then the back wheels and wheel them away.
