Don't ever use Photoshop for logo design! Use Illustrator (amateur).

Instead of "Logo" and "Do it yourself" it should just say "I don't know what I'm talking about."

You shouldn't start with a black background.

You shouldn't start with a color logo when creating your mark and your type.

You shouldn't be way to drunk (like this guy must have been) before you start.

Personally I use both for logo designs, but whats wrong with using Photoshop for that.

I won three logo contests and started doing it free hand then finalizing it by CAD. I am starting to learn Adobe Illustrator. The key to the design is what we want to convey in the logo, the type of business, what the office wants to provide as a service and what the client wants.
