  • There were two distinct schools of thought in France at the time. One wanted to keep the style of Lully and the other wanted to incorporate the latest styles from Italy. Ironically, Lully himself was Italian but he had established such a "French" style as preferred by Louis XIV that it was next to impossible for composers to be allowed to write in the "new" Italian styles: i.e the concerto and sonata forms.
