Part 4 of 5
Michael Tilson Thomas discusses Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major Opus 55 'Eroica',with the assistance of the London Symphony Orchestra, recorded at the Barbican, London.
This was first broadcast by the B.B.C. in the early 1990's, (Tilson Thomas was principal conductor of the LSO from 1988- 95).
The transfer is from an old VHS tape but I think that the quality is acceptable.
Due to Youtube's 10 minute video length rule I have attempted to make the cutting of the programme into several parts as sympathetic as possible.
I hope you find it enjoyable, interesting and illuminating.

Agreed! The double fugue is one of the most powerful moments in the entire work.

It was brought up briefly, but it is probably to complicated to go into during that performance. The audience would be sitting there till midnight, - exhausted.

The reference to Steitbelt is so illuminating... you may know the biographical episode, but dont link it to the music.. fascinating..
