It might be an invitation-only crowd, but there will be plenty of protesters and supporters gathering at Macomb Community College today when President Barack Obama arrives to give a speech on higher education.

There will be people protesting the impact of the economic stimulus package, the Federal Reserve system and the fact that Obama is giving a speech rather than holding a town hall meeting. Others will call on Obama to stop foreclosures and evictions.

Macomb County Republicans, a group supporting U.S. Rep. Ron Pauls legislation on the Federal Reserve and Repower Michigan, which supports climate change legislation, will rally outside the Warren campus during the presidents visit."

Warren, MI - At 1:00 PM on Tuesday, July 14th, 2009 supporters of a more transparent Federal Reserve system will picket outside Macomb Community College in Warren, to express their support of HR 1207 and S 604: Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009. The rally was scheduled to coincide with President Barack Obama's visit to the campus. The event occurs in the wake of pleas be the Obama administration to greatly increase the power of the Federal Reserve, giving it stronger oversight of the largest financial firms.

According to one of the organizers, Scotty Boman, "The political embarrassment of opposing transparency would be too much if the general public were made more aware of the facts. The leadership of both houses of Congress has resorted to procedural tactics to block a vote on the issue. None of these people have been able to present an argument against auditing the Fed, that would make sense to the average voter."

Another organizer, Dan Tollis commented, "Congress passes sweeping multi-billion dollar legislation without even reading it, and auto workers lose their jobs. Now the President is talking about giving the Fed new powers, without being subject to an audit. This all ties together. We need transparency at all levels; our leaders need to know what they're doing, and so do we."

Texas Congressman, Ron Paul was the author of HR 1207: Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009. The act is "to amend title 31, United States Code, to reform the manner in which the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System is audited by the Comptroller General of the United States and the manner in which such audits are reported, and for other purposes." Congressman Paul has introduced legislation that relates to the Federal Reserve before, but this time he is gaining support from his colleagues; the Act currently has 260 cosponsors (60% of the House of Representatives).

Senator Bernie Sanders introduced the Senate version of the bill (S 604) in March. Eight other Senators have signed onto the bill. Organizers expect this momentum to continue.
