ELDERBERRY WINE
Elton John
Don't Shoot Me (I'm Only The Piano Player) (1973)

There's a fly in the window
A dog in the yard
And a year since I saw you
There's a trunk in the corner
I keep all my letters
My bills and demands I keep too

Well I can't help thinking
About the times
You were a wife of mine
You aimed to please me
Cooked black-eyed peas me
Made elderberry wine

Drunk all the time
Feeling fine on elderberry wine
Those were the days
We'd lay in the haze
Forget depressive times
How can I ever get it together
Without a wife in line
To pick the crop and get me hot
On elderberry wine

Round a tree in the summer
A fire in the fall
Flat out when they couldn't stand
The bottle went round
Like a woman down south
Passed on from hand to hand

  • @1973Veteran You know, you are right. I had forgotten all about "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboys". Yellow Brick Road had a few songs that still refelected the old Elton John, but I think your right. This is about the time he came to that fork in the road and chose a different path. No disrespect to the man, but I would love to have seen what could have been, had his music continued down that original path. But he has quite the following to this day. Just a different one.

  • @Msdistarr Then there was Old English 800. But lets don't go there.

  • @Msdistarr I'm in total agreement Msdistarr. His early stuff is brilliant.

  • @Msdistarr I totally agree with you. Although I felt he changed after he did the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album.

  • @TROWERFAN64 The music of his early years were amazing. I know I will get "nasty grams" for this, but I think he took a musical detour. His early stuff was brilliant. He lost me around "Rock Of The Westies". I mean, what happened between his song "Where to now St.Peter", which is incredible, to "Island Girl". A bit of jump, in my opinion. There are 1 or 2 songs that I like on later albums but it's as though they were made by an entirely different person. I miss the early EJ.

  • @TheRorybreaker My choice of nectar back then was either Boones Farm Strawberry Hill or MD 2020 (Mogan David 2020). I don't know if they sell it any more. Hell, they are probably giving it away for free, just to get rid of it. When you were a young teenager, anything would taste good. Oh, those were the days!

  • This was when I drinking Annie Greensprings wine, don't know if they even make that shit anymore, but when your 17 it's the nectar of the Gods

  • wow..what are remebers...

  • Not long ago I realized that you can dance to this song.

  • Loved this album Used to listen to it for hours (although I did that with all of Elton's albums from the 70's back when I had hours to just listen to music.
