Shrek - How to save a life

The Fray song is about an older, more experienced man trying to help a younger man with his problems. The message is that the best way to help is not to offer advice based on your experience - but simply to be prepared to listen, all night if necessary. In this interpretation, Donkey is the wise counsellor and Shrek is the troubled young man. The video was conceived and executed by my wonderful daughter Elise who is 10. My only contribution was in helping to create her. It is dedicated to my good friend Anton who first brought the music to my attention.

actually it's neither,

at least according to The Fray, and since they wrote the song.....

anyway the band says the song was written as memorializing that descent into a crack habit of a teen that a band member was acting as a mentor and friend too. so it's supposed to be from the crack-addicts perspective reflecting on his own life going south.

that is not the meaning behind the song. the band was at a party and one of their friends got very drunk and passed out. they put him on a sofa in the correct position but he vommited in his mouth and died because nobody had "stayed up with him all night" and so he died.
