Sometimes you stumble across the nicest things on YouTube... I've always loved this song, and your version is very fine. Nice guitar playing, too!

@LiteGauge Yes, I have the first 3 albums prior to Steeleye Span.---If I heard it correctly, the band was named by Martin Carthy before he joined. There as an agreement that the band would change it's name if anyone left the band but after Terry & Gay Woods left, it was Tim Hart who argued to keep the name.-- Good choice. The Woods were replaced by Ashley Hutchings & Martin Carthy, for the Please to see the KIng album.

John, Thanks for your reply. There will be a memorial service for Tim in St Albans in January I think. Would you like the details when I get them?

Hi, Thanks very much for your kind comment. Please accept my condolences. I'm so sorry to hear about Tim. I've been a big admirer of Steeleye Span for so many years and saw Tim playing with them several times in the early 70's.
Warmest regards
John

Hi, I am Tim Hart's cousin and, having been away for Christmas, I only learned this evening that Tim sadly died on Christmas Eve. Your beutiful rendition of this song is a great tribute to him.

Fine cover of a fine song. Try listening to the version (and the many other great songs) by Martin Wyndham-Read - to which this bears an uncanncy resemblance. Some of his Australian songs are absolutely heartbreaking.

Thanks very much, Amy
Thanks for getting back to me. My brother used to sing a humorous song called 'The Mole Catcher' I cant find any recordings of it only some lyrics posted on line. DO you have any leads I might follow up. I will post my daughter singing Dancing at Whitsun as soon as I have a moment to record it well.

@debchelsea If you search YT for "The Molecatcher", there's a version by Bernard Wrigley. There are a few comments that might be worth checking out. It sounds like it was a traditional song collected by A.L.Lloyd, who went round transcribing old English songs in the 30's. Nic Jones and Martin Carthy are both mentioned as having sung this song - but I couldn't find any recordings by Nic and haven't tried checking out Martin Carthy.
Regards
John
PS. I'd love to hear another version of Whitsun

Tim was brilliant. I still have the album (clean) that has this song on it. Great Album; Summer Solstice. He will be missed for a lot more than his work with Steeleye Span.

@viking1au I agree. As a duo with Maddy Prior, Tim brought out several fine albums before he joined up with Steeleye Span.

Just to let you know my sixteen yr old daughter sings this, word perfect. It is so beautiful. How I lament our lost culture. Im making it my job to pass down these songs to the next generation.

@debchelsea I don't live in the UK any more so I have no idea how much songs like this get played in folk clubs now. I really hope that YouTube and other sites can help to keep the wealth of traditional or traditional style folk songs alive. I find it very interesting that many of the comments I receive come from Italy or Germany.
