Got my 5er yesterday, only ever spent 10 mins on a 5er in a guitar shop a few weeks ago before getting this baby, and this was pretty much a recording I made as soon as I got used to her! The solo is some Ed Friedland licks I butchered with some Miller-esque improv going into some more improv using the low B... Then the last bit is a Billy Sheehan bass solo from his Tallas days (I'm no Sheehan as you can tell, and this solo is fresh from last week to me, so give me a few more weeks and I should be able to do it a touch better!)

Mic'd the 15" cab on my warwick stack, and ran into Adobe Audition using EQ, compression, slight reverb and all that to make it sound slightly less embaressing, it still sounds a bit dodgy but I'm still getting used to the bass :) might post some more up once I've fully got the hang of the narrower spacing! Was sort of pressured into getting something up now for some curious bass playing peers.

FWIW, the bass is a Fernandes APB-5 modded with EMG USA pickups, and the amp is an Ampeg SVP-Pro preamp through some random power amp I had lying around and through 12" and 15" cabs.

  • Cool! Man you rock! I have been playing a 4 string for 18 years. What is the advantage of a five string? I am thinking about buying one. Is the top string lower than the E of a 4 string? Dude seriously you look young and you play better than Billy Sheenhan.

  • thanks for the comment! i'm 16 and i've been playing bass for a couple of years :) 5s take getting used to but they're more flexible! i play in orchestras a lot, esp. in wind band, and all the pieces are in Eb, and most of them go down as far as B and C... so its great being able to play the fundamental rather than an octave of those notes for that extra power! on most basses the extra string is lower than E (usually B-E-A-D-G) but you can also get a higher string (usually tuned E-A-D-G-C)

  • @ClockworkOrangesS "better than Billy Sheehan"? wtf? have you heard Billy Sheehan? Are you actually mental? Seriously, I mean this guy is great for his age and plays better than me (I have only been playing for six months) but he did say he is no Sheehan, I will stick with the guys own judgement here. PS, Techmonkey, no offence meant to you, I love bass, and wish I could play as well as you do, but I'm also pedantic about Billy Sheehan.
