I'm going to include my interpretation of this song, taken from a private message I had written to robby63. Robby had left a comment which zeroed in on exactly why I play and sing this song the way I do. I e-mailed him to tell him this and he suggested I post my explanation alongside the video. I hesitated to do this because I feel everyone has their own interpretation of a song, but for those who are interested in mine, here it is:

To me, this is a very emotional song. The person begins quietly, remembering, and then starts picking up steam (in the "roll the dice" verse) as he vividly recalls the power he had held. It's like he hasn't dared think of all of this for so long and then suddenly it comes pouring out (which is why I cut the guitar breaks by half and cut out one entirely. They break the momentum of the song.) The "whoa-oa" part is the release of that pent-up sadness and grief for all that he had and all that he has lost. I don't strum the chords for the final line to emphasize what he is saying, that despite everything, yes he did once "rule the world".
