Mildred Bailey - They Can't Take That Away From Me (1940)

They Can't Take That Away From Me" is a 1937 song written by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin and introduced by Fred Astaire in the 1937 film Shall We Dance.

Personnel includes: Mildred Bailey (vocals); Alec Wilder, Eddie Sauter (arranger); Russell Procope (alto saxophone); Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Roy Eldridge (trumpet); Buster Bailey (clarinet); Mitch Miller (oboe, English horn); John Kirby (bass). January 25, 1940

This is one of several sessions that took place under the direction of composer and arranger Alec Wilder, using 'chamber' instrumentalists
like that master of the oboe and Cor anglais, Mitch Miller.
This kind of production worked best when Bailey's voice was able to wrap itself around truly wonderful lyrics and melodies like "All the Things You Are," "Easy to Love" and "They Can't Take That Away from Me."

  • @myrnaukelele I appreciate your good taste! Grtz, Aad

  • @freescorepaul Thank you too Paul! I absolute agree with you...Mildred had here worldclass musicians in her orchestra. This arrangement is a class apart...very stylish and in a way risky, using 'chamber' instrumentalists to accompany "Mrs Swing"! Grtz, Aad
