Legendary fashion designer and well-known Nashville personality Manuel spoke to the History of Rock class at Vanderbilt Dec. 8, 2009.
Known as the Rhinestone Rembrandt," Manuel has designed signature looks for hundreds of the most influential rock and country musicians in American music history. Some of his creations are famous in their own right, including Elvis Presleys gold lame suit, Johnny Cashs black suits, and Graham Parsons infamous pills and pot leaves suit. When Bob Dylan played for the pope, he wore Manuel.
His influence extends beyond the world of music Manuel has wardrobed 89 movies, 13 television shows and several presidents, and his work can be found in museums throughout the country, including the Smithsonian and the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Many people in Nashville remember his exhibit at the Frist a few years ago, which featured a stunning collection of 50 red, white or blue jackets, one for each of the nations states.
