For anyone curious, most of the music Glenn Kotche is playing on drums after a couple of minutes is on his solo album "Mobile". A lot of tribal drumming influences. If you liked this video you'll probably like the CD.

This video leads to the immediate question: why the hell can't we hear any of this kickass Kotche drumming on any Wilco studio stuff?

Because Kotche is such the skilled drummer that he understands dynamics and balance...the drumming has to be appropriate for the vibe of the song. He puts his ego outside the music, and that allows him to play exactly what is needed, regardless of how exciting or boring it may be.

I wouldn't say it's BORING; I'd say that it's easily ignorable and indifferent. And I don't think Wilco should have a Copeland or a Moon at the drums, but some extra energy in the percussion could have put some songs ("Monday", "Can't Stand It", a few others) in an even greater realm.

Kotche joined Wilco after those songs had been recorded and released. Watch live versions of them and see the energy he interjects.

The perfect blend of creativity, technique and insanity.
