  • I purchased the packets from a Canadian distributor for the body ecology probiotic culture starter. I now make it from my own kefir "grains" that I got from a guy I found on a list of people that have kefir grains to give away or for sale found by googling saskatoon free kefir .

  • thanks for the video ;-) just curious if you have to sterilize your jars first? I have successfully made the young coconut kefir with water kefir grains but am also going to try it with the body ecology starter just to see the difference ;-) btw...Donna Gates says she doesn't like to 'whirrrr the culture in the vitamix' because she believes they go schitzophrenic LOL but it obviously works here ;-) I know many people say not to use metal with my water kefir grains and yet it works fine ;-)

  • @wendypape Sterilizing your jars is unnecessary and just more work. Good old soap and water will do. That is unless your jars have had bodily fluids in them or were once used for holding science experiments ;) People get so paranoid and crazy with the making of the cultures lol. Most bacteria are really hardy and will grow with very little effort. Not stirring too much, heating the water, sterilizing jars, no metal...These are for "potential" OPTIMAL results and are not the ONLY way.

  • Thank you for the helpful video. Two questions, how to do you open the coconuts so neatly? Is it OK to blend the culture, I have not ordered this yet so I have not read the directions to this? An older farmer who has been making kefir for years told me, about 10 years ago not to stir or break up the culture. He's still working, probably about 80 by now, good food probably helps. I realize this is a powder, so perhaps it is OK???

  • @dott1006 I just saw this comment now. Sorry for the late reply. Coconuts can be opened in many ways. I've noticed that there is a little cap already ingrained in the coconut so all you have to do is just shave the white part down on the top of the coconut and tap around the base of the top with a heavy knife and it will crack open, then just pry it out. In this video I just cut around the cap with a really sturdy knife with a partial serrated blade. Or you can use a heavy cleaver.

  • @dott1006 Stirring the culture if fine. Remember they are bacteria in a solution of food. Good luck trying to kill them lol. When using kefir grains, you do not want to break up the grains or stir them in because you want them to grow and so you can use them over and over again, Donna Gate's kefir powder is good, but I prefer using actual kefir grains now. Kefir grains are traded, usually for free or just the shipping, around the world. Just google +kefir +toronto +advisors

  • Young coconuts cost from $2.50 to $5 each around here, so one batch like yours would cost $10 to $20 plus the cost of kefir starter.

I have no problem with organic cow milk kefir. It may be good for someone with dairy allergy. I can make dairy kefir and re use the grains over and over again. You buy them one time and that's it. MUCH more economical.

  • @Organicrevolution So would tightly closing the jar on the kefir water and yogurt mess up the batch? Do you also need to keep the batches in a dark cupboard away from any light source? I've been trying to ferment the coconut water for a month and have still not been successful. I've even bought a space heater and have tried regulating the temp to no avail. Thinking about giving up on this soon.

  • thanks for the response. And where to get a bunch of coconut for a discounted price or cheaper??? I get ones from the grocery store for like $3.00 usd, real expensive..

  • I have never fermented coconut...but I have done milk kefir. Can you use some already cultured coconut kefir as a starter for the next batch??? Continually buying the starter seems a bit expensive to me in the long run but I can see the necessity to use it starting it the fist time...just wondering...???

  • Great video! Where did you purchase the probiotic PACKET?? what brand is highly recommended?
