Nelson made this super 8 movie of the summer crowd in Cherry Grove while studying in film school. One summer, Nelson opened a hair salon on Fire Island called David/Nelson.

That was the first summer I visited the Grove. Great memories. And I even caught a glimpse of the Emerald Queen outside the Monster!

To me, the black cat, in hindsight, gives an ominous foreshadowing.

I live in Australia and was always fascinated by the legend that was Fire Island. Unfortunately I never got there. Now I'm 55 and been to New York 4 times but still never to Fire Island. My holidays are always your winters. I will go and maybe be lucky enough to breathe a little history. Thanks for this film clip.
