Guests arrive for the holiday celebrations at the prison, a priest pronounces a blessing and the prisoners enjoy some free time. Skuratov (John Mark Ainsley)tells the story of Luisa -- a German girl he wanted to marry, she was a washerwoman and he was in love with her. But one day she said her aunt wanted her to marry a rich German watchmaker. She begged him not to ruin her opportunity. She stopped seeing him and he waited and hoped. Finally he turned up uninvited at the wedding and shot the bridegroom. What became of Luisa? Ask the other prisoners, but Skuratov just cries out "Luisa".

  • This production was given during the Vienna Festwochen in 2007 but it was also shown at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam and at the Aix-en-Provence Festival - I'm not sure where the DVD was recorded.

  • Where was this production staged? Dresden?
