Actually, sometimes I like weak interview questions because they allow the interviewee to take the conversation in any direction and expand freely to compensate for the shallowness of the questions, and in Leo's case... heh it's quite classic.

God bless Leo Kottke! Not only one of the finest guitarists to ever live, but the most "hilariously honest interview" ever!! His musings alone are worth double the price of admission at one of his shows!!! LOL!

I think his "quirky deflections" are the result of innumerabe questions posed by interviewers.
Leo is indeed a private person. He is in NO WAY insecure, he is just private. If you are aware of his fan base, you would know that he has some pretty "dedicated" fans who pose some concern for him.
Don't take a 1983 interview to be the person he is now. Though, in this clip, I don't find much difference in the Leo then than the Leo now. To me, he's damn consistent.
