To be like todays smartphone, you needed a brickphone, a walkman, a beeper, a portable tv, and a vcr.

With the phones of the 80's you got your money's worth. Durable enough to actually reach out and touch someone. The phones of today seem to lose something when the wind blows.

They only thing that's changed is the size of the phone, the prices are still the same - why do you think you are locked into multi-year contracts? It's to pay off the $600 smart phone you "bought" for $99.
