@jminto88 Madame Elsie is not Anna Bella's grandmother, but her guardian from where Anna Bella's white grandfather dropped her off when his son was killed. I thought she could've been, but the book says all Elsie's children disappeared into the white race - passe blanc - so she obviously had been in placage in her day... Anna Bella's father had been a slave - I guess cause his mother was, bought his freedom, opened a barber shop & married a free woman before they were killed by jealous whites

He is a douche bag dad!! Keeping your own child as a slave and undermining the relationship she could have had with the other siblings in the household.
