Rape would still happen even if we all wore burkas. Children and the elderly don't wear provocative clothing, and yet they're still raped. That's because it's all about power, not a lack of self-control. In fact, most rape victims know their rapists, so obviously clothes have nothing to do with it.

You're going in a dangerous direction when you start blaming the victims. What about guys who get raped in prison showers? Would you say they deserved it because they chose to take a shower?

Or, alternatively, the same logic doesn't apply when someone shoots and kills an unarmed teenager

Actually, the clothing that you wear has a lot to do with your character. Shoes, outfits, jewelry, hair color, and piercings all have a great deal to do with character. If a person dresses like a hipster, are they a hipster? If a person dresses in a dirty fashion, are they dirty? Most likely. Making judgments based on appearance has kept our species safe from danger for millions of years.

But that's the point of "don't blame the victim" advocates: that the victim's choice of clothing should not have any bearing on establishing her character for juries and prosecutions. It's a "blaming the victim" mindset that plagues our legal system today, and that's what the advocates want to change.

Defenses use that dirty tactic in an attempt to undermine the plaintiff's credibility. But once people realize that wearing a ho's uniform does not cause more rapes, then it won't come up.

Prosecutors look at the behaviour of the victim when deciding whether or not to prosecute a rape case because that's what the jury will look at. They have no objective legal definition by which to prosecute, and must depend wholly on the character and presentation of the victim in court to uphold their case.

One day, "don't blame the victim" advocates will learn that they're undermining their own cause: to ensure that rapists are prosecuted and locked away.

No, it didn't. You need to learn to read, clearly. I explicitly said the opposite.

Part of the issue is we define "rape" as "Anything the victim feels was rape." That's a poor definition for a crime.

That's also part of the reason many *actual* rapists go free: since the definition of the crime relies purely on the thoughts of those involved, all you need to do is vilify the victim. In a case against a paedophile, for example, you need only demonstrate a violation of the age-of-consent laws.

It came from you. You were the one who said we're not placing enough blame on the victims.

One of the biggest myths about rape is that you're more likely to be raped if you're wearing provocative clothing. If that were true, then a large percentage of rape victims would be girls who wear ho's uniforms, but that's just not the case. And "provocative" is such a subjective term, anyway. Rapists look for opportunity, not mini-skirts.

Where the fuck did "they deserved it" come from? There's a massive difference between assigning an appropriate level of responsibility and saying "they deserved it."

If I drink heavily, I don't *DESERVE* the hangover in the morning, but that is, as it turns out, a possible consequence of my actions which I should carefully consider before drinking.

what is an appropriate amount of blame in your opinion? because i think not blaming victims at all is the appropriate thing to do. it's a different story if women who wear short clothes are hit on, which is what they should expect if they wear sexy clothes. but no type of clothing gives another person the right to rape those women. i also find it problematic that you draw a comparison to drinking and driving and selling drugs, which are things that are illegal.
