Scenic Cellars held their Annual Malt Whisky Tasting on 19th September 2009.
Fifty people enjoyed an afternoon of Scottish tradition, including bagpipes, haggis and whisky tasting.
The event kicked off with local Taupo Piper, Don Ryder, playing from the Scenic Cellars balcony, overlooking Lake Taupo. Whisky expert, Michael Fraser Milne (Whisky Galore, Christchurch) presented an in-depth tasting of six fantastic single malts, ranging in price from $109 to $450 per bottle.
In 2008 Michael Fraser Milne was awarded a Keeper of the Quaich, the Whisky equivalent of a knighthood, so it was an honour to have him in store again. The Keepers of the Quaich are an exclusive group that help to promote the Scotch Whisky Industry and he is the only the third New Zealander to be invited to be part of this group, and the only one in the past decade.
At the conclusion of the whisky tasting, the haggis was piped in and the traditional Robbie Burns address was given by Jim Arthur. The haggis was served with neeps and tatties for guests to enjoy.
