Although often overlooked, the background of a painting is just as important as the main subject - simply because it needs to complement the subject while not distracting from it.

In this video, watercolor painter Arleta Pech shows how she creates dynamic, fluid backgrounds for her floral subject matter.

  • What paper are you painting on?

  • Thank you for posting this. I've been wanting to see some instruction on how to paint background and this is it. Very nice!! Thanks again!!!

  • I often use india ink as a background for contrast. With India ink, you can use a very fine point to go around the subject, then use a large brush to do the rest of it with no tide marks. Since black and white are complementary, a light subject like your flowers jump out at you. Since India ink does not run, you could do it first then add the watercolor as you did in the video with no chance of running of the ink into the watercolor. This make it ink and watercolor of course.
