Funazushi (the salted carp) was preserved between layers of salt and fermented rice, but the rice was considered to be too strong to eat back then, so only the fish was eaten. So, rice does play a role in funazushi - it just doesn't get eaten.

This looks like an interesting battle. When the ingredient is something this mild in flavor, the chefs need to become very inventive in their preparations and sauces. Accomplishing that, yet still highlighting the rice, will not be easy.
