When Lobo covered this song in the 70s-80s, he (not they...Lobo was a one-name guy like Cher) changed it from "Mel Blanc" to "the Allman Brothers" on one album, and "James Taylor" on another. The song was written by Alex Harvey, Edward B Reeves and I don't know if they ever wrote another, or another popular song.

The original song referred to "Wilson Pickett" on the radio. LK, as always, is just goofin' around. He's just great, isn't he?.... I'm a guitarist and he amazes me.

Leo is a national treasure. I've been a fan since "6 & 12 String Guitar" (the armadillo album on Fahey's label). His playing transports me. Sublime,

You're right, the way Kottke sings it scans much better. But then why Mel Blanc, who's best known for voicing Bugs Bunny and friends? That's what puzzles me. I thought Kottke meant Mel Tormé because this is a corny love song, and Tormé is known for singing love songs.

Well, tormé also has two syllables, and the stress in on the second one as well, which sounds a little funny in the song.

Kottke has a very very weird sense of humor and he's not all that interested that Everyone pick up on it. That's all this Mel Blanc thing was. Cheers everyone. Lighten up :)
