Lobstering off Swans Island Maine, Fall of 08'. Shows hauling 2 pairs of traps, and shows how the new "Whale safe" line wears too quickly, and is not practical. Thanks to "feel-good" useless environmental legislation, the cost of catching lobsters is going up. learn more about lobstering in Maine at www.swansislandrentatrap.com

  • What whales? I've been fishing Maticus for years, I have never seen a Right (Wrong) Whale. We been parting off traps all season and so has everyone else. I can't imagine the amount off ghost traps that are on the bottom. I hate whales now!

  • I totally agree with you. It's getting to the point(I'll probably piss someone off right now) that I'm starting to not like the whale very much. Not when lobstermen have to pay the price. Good luck and stay safe.

  • Why do I get the sense after watching this and reading these comments that

Maine lobstermen aren't the most intelligent people on the planet? There are

what, 300 right whales left? If you don't like the rules the government has set

to protect the remaining whales, get out of fishing and go grow potatoes.

  • Whale rope is so fucking stupid I fish out of bar harbor Maine, I dont have to use it yet becuase I don't go past the 3 mile limit yet. But i've been fishing with plenty of people and it is junk

  • I've lost probably 100 traps because of the whale rope. It's the most pointless law ever put on the books. the thought that a 100ft whale is gonna wrap up in 60-70 feet of rope near the bottom of the ocean is totally ridiculous. nice vid....

  • Excellent clip ..(Scottish lobsterman)....Be safe and get a fair wind ....

  • this year, with the whale safe rope, we've actually had a lot less tangles in the trawl when we go to haul it up because it's on the bottom, not floating and slipping around the other traps. not as big a head ache as snapped ground line though!

  • I worked a scallop dragger outta SW Harbor and fished these same waters. Yes there are whales around, but you usually have to get out past Cranberry Is. and then out aways. Saw plenty of them 20 miles out around Mt. Desert Rock

  • I keep coming back to this video. Absolutely love it. Stay Safe.

  • johnk437, I couldn't of said it better. I've been on a whale watch once but I'll never go on another one again. The NMFS did that to me. I know lobstermen from ME who never saw a whale either. Maybe the NMFS people will die and all go to hell.

  • For anyone who doesn't like my comment, oh well. I'm sorry the lobstering industry have been hit hard enough. Obviously your probably someone who loves whales .Now I don't care if I see another one. The NOAA is ( well I better not say here, I'll really piss someone off) But they are useless to me. Talk about screwing up things with there rules and regulations. And 39oldsalt, it's obvious NOAA has no common sense. I couldn't agree with you more.
