God Help the Outcasts from the Disney film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, 1996.
Copyright Disney.

Lyrics:

I don't know if You can hear me
Or if You're even there
I don't know if You would listen
To a gypsie's prayer
Yes, I know I'm just an outcast
I shouldn't speak to you
Still I see Your face and wonder...
Were You once an outcast too?

God help the outcasts
Hungry from birth
Show them the mercy
They don't find on earth
God help my people
We look to You still
God help the outcasts
Or nobody will

Parishioners
I ask for wealth
I ask for fame
I ask for glory to shine on my name
I ask for love I can posess
I ask for God and His angels to bless me

Esmeralda
I ask for nothing
I can get by
But I know so many
Less lucky than I
Please help my people
The poor and downtrod
I thought we all were
The children of God
God help the outcasts
Children of God

  • When she says "Were you once an outcast, too?" she means that when Jesus came to Earth he wasn't treated like a king but scorned, mocked, and tortured to be treated like a lower level, just like an outcast, so he knows what it feels like to be that level.

    This is a beautiful song!!

  • If you think about it, Mary herself was an outcast because she had been conceived by the Holy Spirit and she was not yet married and back then society would have treated unmarried pregnant women like lepers. Hell, even Joseph thought of stoning her until Gabriel told him the truth.

  • @Seofangurl And if you do not believe in the sinlessness of Mary, I understand. It's a big hurdle for a lot of people. However, do at least know that Catholics still think Mary is a creature. She depends on God for everything she received, including her sinless state, and if God so willed, He didn't need Mary. But He worked through her, all the same. And we respect that.

Also note, we never said she was without original sin BEFORE her conception. Christ saved her... before birth.

  • @Seofangurl If that is so, then why don't you show any reverence to Mary? Throughout all of history Christians have had a respect for her. It's a modern invention of man to say Mary was a scummy sinner.

That said, you're wrong. We respect Mary. We've never worshipped her. We've ALWAYS worshiped Jesus, and God in general (including the Holy Ghost). Mary, though, is like an Olympic runner: we admire that gift of being born without sin she received from God. She was very blessed.

  • @Tjcguy rewatch the whole movie, and REALLY listen and observe the scene where frollo is demanding that he either HAS ESMERELDA TO HIMSELF (Pride/Lust) OR WANTS HER TO BURN (Wrath)

  • @heylovex3 There are TOO MANY it would take hours... like, at least 6 hours...

  • @wizardwarrior713 unfortunately shes actually talking to Mary Mother of God, because back then they worshipped god and Mary, not so much Jesus

  • frollo disliked this

  • i think glee should do a episode with all disney songs<3

  • one of my favorite moives when i was little<3 i always wanted to be her:)

  • @Chrazycat pocahontas is a princess. the chief is basically the king of their tribe. but mulan and especially esmerelda are not princesses
